Born in Toronto, the son of the late Major David. L. Bennett (1965) and the late Grace w. Bennett. ne Maidens (1963). Loving brother of Jane Grace Goddard (the late Rev. Morse Goddard-2003), the late Joan St. Albans Bennett (2002) (the late Joan Frith). Loving uncle of Beth Goddard and Rebecca Goddard. Great Uncle of Christian McDonald, Justine Walker, Olivia and Rachel Bowman. Curator, collector, author of "Letters to a Small Town" and "Grass Roots & Water Lilies" (the life and work of Paul Bennett), long term resident of Cobourg, Port Hope and Stratford, Ontario. Paul was a superb and valued friend to many and an appreciative member of Trinity United Church in Cobourg. Paul and his sisters, Joan and Jane, grew up surrounded by and involved in the arts - the visual arts, the decorative arts, the piano, the harp, the harpsicord, the clavichord, singing. After obtaining a Fine Arts BA, Paul began his remarkable career in the arts in Ontario, with a provincially-funded Position as an Arts and Crafts Advisor. When 13 of Ontario's professional art galleries collaboratively created the Art Institute of Ontario, Paul became involved, preparing circulating art exhibitions and giving art lectures throughout the province. In 63-64, the AIO circulated 50 small professional art exhibitions throughout Ontario; in 66-67 there were 137 bookings; in its last year, Paul and Nan Girard ran 69 exhibitions for 71S bookings: the total budget for that year was $35,000 funded by the Ontario Arts Council. The latest figures available from the Ontario Association of Art Galleries indicates that Ontario now hosts more than 125 art galleries.
Paul was also professionally proud of the Centennial visual arts project he created and ran for the Ontario Arts Council. It involved a competition held in 20 communities in Ontario and Quebec judged by a famous English art gallery director. The winning artworks were purchased by the two provincial governments, exhibited at the AGO, circulated in a series of touring exhibitions throughout the two provinces and then permanently placed in provincially-funded galleries. After a year in Europe on a Canada Council grant, and while working for the Roberts Gallery in Toronto as a curator, Paul was asked to take over the directorship of the Robert McLaughlin Art Gallery in Oshawa. While working there, Paul and Mrs. Kay Woods developed a unifying concept for the Board, in which the Gallery would actively focus its developing collection on the works of eleven "up and coming" Ontario painters, later collectively known as "The Painters Eleven": Jack Bush, Alexandra Luke, Ray Mead, Kazuo Nakamura, William Ronald, Tom Hodgson, Oscar Cohen, Jack McDonald, Harold Town, Walter Yarward and Hortense Gordon. Kay Woods visited each of the artists as the Gallery's Ambassador, persuading them all to participate, while Paul managed the Gallery and its ongoing programmes and art classes, making the Gallery a vital element of the Oshawa community.
In 1972 Paul was invited to become the founding director of the Canadian Guild of Crafts (Ontario); he helped develop its gallery on Prince Arthur Avenue in Toronto. Paul continued to work actively in the organized arts and crafts field in Ontario for many years, living in Stratford for 20 years and later retiring to Port Hope and Cobourg. Over the decades Paul continued to lecture and jury exhibits. He also encouraged, assisted and promoted the efforts of innumerable young Ontario residents as they strove to create professional lives as artists, craftspersons and artisans. In retirement Paul wrote his autobiography "Grass Roots & Water Lilies", followed a few years later by "Letters To a Small Town".
Paul's varied interests in the arts of all kinds never diminished. He obtained the greatest joy during his last months in spending time with former students, young artists, friends in the arts, friends who wished they were in the arts, and his family members. Paul Bennett will be greatly missed; his contributions to the development of opportunities for professional artists in Ontario and to the growth in interest in the Ontario public in the visual arts have permanently benefited all Ontario residents. Paul's legacy is one that many could well aspire to emulate.
A Celebration of Paul's life will be held at Trinity United Church, corner of Division and Chapel Streets, Cobourg, Ontario on Friday, May 30, 2014, at 1 p.m. Visitation will be at 12 noon. In lieu of flowers, In Memoriam donations to Trinity United Church Chancel Choir would be greatly appreciated. Interment will take place at a later date. A special thank you to the caregivers at Victoria Retirement Living, Victoria Order of Nurses and St. Elizabeth's Healthcare, and to Dr. Dersnah, Dr. Moorsom and the staff of Northumberland Hills Hospital, and to Richard Randall, for the compassionate care they each gave Paul during his illness. Jane Grace Goddard (Bennett). GODDARD, Jane Grace Bennett, U.E., A.R.C.T. - Passed away peacefully at Extendicare, Port Hope at the age of 89 on October 21, 2018. Jane Goddard was born in Toronto on March 4, 1929, to Grace Winnifred Maidens and David Leonard Bennett. She grew up in Belleville and Toronto, then lived in Newcastle during her early adult life. Jane studied piano, receiving her ARCT (The Associate of the Royal Conservatory) diploma, then went on to receive her degree as Soloist Artist from the University of Toronto, Faculty of Music, in
affiliation with the Royal Conservatory of Music. While studying music in Toronto, she met her husband, Morse Goddard, also a music enthusiast. Jane's interest in music continued throughout her life. She and Morse, along with other musical friends, founded the Oriana Singers in Cobourg, which still exists today. Jane and Morse were married at St. Peter's Church in Cobourg on May 31, 1958. The couple welcomed Beth Caroline in 1960 and
Rebecca Grace Anne in 1963, whereupon the family moved from Don Mills to Apsley for Morse to fulfill his role as an Anglican minister at the Apsley parish. In 1965 Jane moved back to Newcastle with her family where she taught piano lessons and opened an antique shop out of one room in their house. The antique business was to become a life-long venture which continued in Grafton in 1968, with Morse later joining her in the business. Together they operated Spaulding's Inn Antiques until 2003, when Morse passed away at age 73. During the majority of Jane's life, local and family history was a passion, a flame that was passed down from her mother. From years of research and family notes, and as a
descendant of a United Empire Loyalist, Jane wrote and privately published "Hans Waltimeyer", a voluminous book on the life and military career of her direct ancestor, Captain John Walden Meyers, who was a spy for the British during the American Revolution and later founded Belleville. Wanting to make sure that everyone in the family knew who and where they came from, Jane created 10 massive Family Trees covering all ancestral ties, for
which her family will be forever grateful. Later in life, Jane endeavoured to write a biography about Morse's father, Captain Leonard Morse Goddard and his life at sea, however, the onset of dementia prohibited its completion. Jane was the proverbial entrepreneur and loved
working with her hands to create, be it making beeswax candles, caning chair seats, braiding rugs or making jewellery. She loved attending auctions, playing cards and board games, singing, telling family stories and gnawing on a good turkey leg. She taught strong family values and compassion for others. Nothing in life was an obstacle and she made the best of everything. Jane is survived and will be dearly missed by her daughters Beth Goddard and
Rebecca Goddard; her grandchildren Christian McDonald (Hilary), Olivia Bowman, Rachel Bowman and Justine Walker; her great-grandson Nolan McDonald; and long-time family friend Susan Lowman. She will also be missed by Chris Bowman, John Rainbird, Glenn
McDonald, Ray Cobbing and other family and friends. Predeceased by husband Morse Minet Anson-Cartwright Goddard, sister Joan St. Albans Bennett and brother Paul David Bennett.
