Sr. was born a British subject, 6 September, 1774, in "Little Nine Partners,'' Dutchess Co., New York. He was the third child born to Lydia Rogers and Thomas Draper. The name "Little Nine
Partners" was given to one of the many tracts of land granted by the English Crown, or Colonial Governor, to influence Colonial groups or individuals who held land for speculation. It was not to be given for a nominal price to poor immigrants seeking cheap lands for permanent settlement." from "William Draper Sr., "Compiled and arranged by Lenna Cox Wiikock, March 2003, From histories by Melba Smith Ziser, Estella Rebecca Draper Burt, Estella Draper Magnus", US Family Histories, page 267 (313 of 378), ancestry.ca.

Note: The Wyoming Valley is in north-east Pennsylvania, with its north end at the border with New York State.2 He lived on 1 September 1787 at U.S.A; "This was just prior to the Revolution. They were crucial years during which America was fiercely struggling for independence. Certainly, William was aware of many great historical events taking place for he was thirteen years old when the Constitution was signed on 17 September, 1787." from "William Draper Sr., "Compiled and arranged by Lenna Cox Wiikock, March 2003, From histories by Melba Smith Ziser, Estella Rebecca Draper Burt, Estella Draper Magnus", US Family Histories, page 267 (313 of 378), ancestry.ca.2 He lived on 26 July 1788 at New York, U.S.A; " ... and fourteen when New York received her statehood 26 July 1788." from "William Draper Sr., "Compiled and arranged by Lenna Cox Wiikock, March 2003, From histories by Melba Smith Ziser, Estella Rebecca Draper Burt, Estella Draper Magnus", US Family Histories, page 267 (313 of 378), ancestry.ca.2 He lived on 20 April 1789 at U.S.A; "He was fifteen years old when George Washington took the oath as the first President of the United States, 20 April 1789." from "William Draper Sr., "Compiled and arranged by Lenna Cox Wiikock, March 2003, From histories by Melba Smith Ziser, Estella Rebecca Draper Burt, Estella Draper Magnus", US Family Histories, page 267 (313 of 378), ancestry.ca.2 He appeared on the census of 1790 at Watervliet, Albany Co., New York, U.S.A; 1790 Census: Thomas Draper; 2 males 16 and over, 1 male under 16; 5 females; Total Members: 8 (1790 US Fed Census: Watervliet, Albany Co., NY, pg. 12 of 13, 8th from bottom, right column, ancestry.ca)
Note: It could be that William Draper may be the second male over 16 in the 1790 Census. (Dan Buchanan, Apr 10 2026.)3 He lived in April 1791 at Rome, New York, U.S.A; "About 1790 news reached William's parents of an opening to settlement of the Mohawk Valley in Northern New York where a promise was held of much better agricultural land; a prime reason for moving there. Up to this time, eight children had been born to Thomas and Lydia. In the fall of 1790 or the spring of 1791 they reached and settled in Rome, New York. Here three more children were born, the last two being twins." from "William Draper Sr., "Compiled and arranged by Lenna Cox Wiikock, March 2003, From histories by Melba Smith Ziser, Estella Rebecca Draper Burt, Estella Draper Magnus", US Family Histories, page 267 (313 of 378), ancestry.ca.2 He married Lydia Lathrop, daughter of Isaac Lathrop and Lucy Pike, on 24 December 1794 at Rome, Oneida Co., New York, U.S.A; "William, their third child, was an independent young man of twenty-one at this time and chose to stay in Rome. Estella Rebecca Draper Burt, in her history, suggested as a reason for their moving " Lydia (William's mother) did not think it right to rebel against their mother country, nor to fight on the side of the British against their colonists neighbors, so they went to Canada where there was no disturbance ... Note: The twins, Joel and Lucretia, were born Aug 22 1795. This note is a bit misleading. Thomas and family came to Cramahe Twp. before 1803 and after the twins were born in 1795. William was married in 1794 and most of his children were born in Rome, NY. He first appears in Cramahe census records in 1810 and goes to 1818 when it appears he went to Loughborough near Kingston. (Dan Buchanan, Apr 10 2026.)2 He appeared on the census of 1800 at Rome, Oneida Co., New York, U.S.A; 1800 US Fed Census: William Draper; 1 male under 16; 1 male 16 thru 25; 2 females under 10; 1 female 16 thru 25; 3 members under 16; Total Members: 5 (1800 US Fed Census: Rome, Oneida Co., New York, pg. 8 of 11, line 12 - ancestry.ca.)3 He "Most of the Drapers were leaving New York and moving to Canada by 1795, except William Jr. and Elizabeth Staker. They remained in Rome, Oneida, New York. William Jr. moved his family to Canada later, when William's mother, Lydia Lathrope, was ill and dying." from "Life History of Mary Mosier Carey Draper" by Kaye Durfee Warnke, February 2016, found in Notes with Mary Mosier's FindaGrave record. https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/58511940/mary-draper)
Note: Lydia (Rogers) Draper died Feb 7 1807. circa 1806 at Rome, Oneida Co., New York, U.S.A..4 He lived in January 1807 at Rome, Oneida Co., New York, U.S.A; "In January 1807 his father sent a faithful Indian friend down from Canada to the states with a message begging William to bring his family to Canada to see his mother before she died. She was extremely ill, and not expected to live. His parents were now living in Richmond Township, Frontenac Co., Ontario, Upper Canada. Even though the northern winter was bitterly cold and they faced a treacherous journey and though Lydia, William's wife, was expecting her fifth child within a few weeks, they were determined to go. They, with their four daughters and nephew Charles, travelled by sleigh and left New York State. " ... and with the Indian as guide they crossed the ice of Lake Erie. It was a dangerous venture but the Indian was a very valuable, capable guide. They also took Charles back to his father." When they reached Richmond they met with their father Thomas out along the road where he stood watch for them better. He was chopping trees to occupy his worried mind while waiting. He paid the Indian and gave him some food and he went back to his people well satisfied that he had led the son home in time." from page 268, "William Draper Sr. 1774-1854", US Family History Books, (page 313 of 378), (https://www.ancestry.ca/imageviewer/collections/62282/images/62282_b1064843-00312?rc=&queryId=76e50d2c-45bd-4efb-8d38-cb14e6d110d9&usePUB=true&_phsrc=aqD3447&_phstart=successSource&pId=4420138021)
Note: This section is problematic is many ways. We have to remember, this is verbal history based on recollections many years later. First, Richmond Township was in Lennox & Addington County, to the west of Frontenac County where Kingston was located. William's parents, Thomas and Lydia, were living in Cramahe Township, Northumberland County, well to the west of there. Thomas is mentioned in Cramahe census records from 1803 through to 1817 when he died. Lydia died in 1807, most likely in Cramahe Township where they lived. For folks in New York State, the various locations in Upper Canada were mysterious in those days. We also know that William's older brother, Thomas, was established in Ernestown Township around this time, near Richmond Township.2 He lived on 3 February 1807 at Cramahe Twp., Northumberland Co., Upper Canada; "Even though the northern winter was bitterly cold and they faced a treacherous journey and though Lydia, William's wife, was expecting her fifth child within a few weeks, they were determined to go. 1774-1854", US Family History Books, (page 313 of 378), (https://www.ancestry.ca/imageviewer/collections/62282/images/62282_b1064843-00312?rc=&queryId=76e50d2c-45bd-4efb-8d38-cb14e6d110d9&usePUB=true&_phsrc=aqD3447&_phstart=successSource&pId=4420138021.)2 He lived on 4 February 1807 at Cramahe Twp., Northumberland Co., Upper Canada; Here's my take. There are several different locations given for the death of Lydia (Rogers) Draper, but what makes the most sense in terms of documentation, is that she died at home in Cramahe Township, Northumberland County. It may be that their son, Thomas, who was getting established in Ernestown Township, Lennox & Addington County, brought his new wife, Mary Mosier, to visit his parents in light of his mother's poor health. His brother, William and family, appear to have come from Rome, New York at the same time, to be there a few days before she died February 7, 1807. William stayed with his father afterward and Thomas and Mary went back to Ernestown. This seems like the most likely scenario. (Dan Buchanan, Apr 11 2026.)2 He appeared on the census of 1809 at Cramahe Twp., Northumberland Co., Upper Canada; 1809 Census: Wm. Draper; 1 male over 16; ?1 female over 16, ? males under 16, 1 female under 16 (Newcastle District Census & Assessment Records, Cramahe Twp.)
Note: This record is obscured by big black smudges, so impossible to make out the people with William Draper. However, this is the first time he appears in Cramahe Township census records. There are no 1808 records, and he is not with Thomas in Cramahe in the 1807 census, a few months after Lydia died. Census records were most often taken in spring or summer. (Dan Buchanan, Apr 16 2026.)5 He appeared on the census of 1810 at Cramahe Twp., Northumberland Co., Upper Canada; 1810 Census: Wm. Draper; 1 male over 16; 1 female over 16 (Newcastle District Census & Assessment Records, Cramahe Twp.)
Note: This record is very clear, showing only the two adults in the household.5 He appeared on the census of 1813 at Cramahe Twp., Northumberland Co., Upper Canada; 1813 Census: Wm. Draper; 2 males over 16; 2 females over 16; 2 males under 16; 3 females under 16 (Newcastle District Census & Assessment Records, Cramahe Twp.)5 He appeared on the census of 1814 at Cramahe Twp., Northumberland Co., Upper Canada; 1814 Census: Wm. Draper; 2 males over 16; 1 female over 16; 1 male under 16; 2 females under 16 (Newcastle District Census & Assessment Records, Cramahe Twp.)5 He appeared on the census of 1815 at Cramahe Twp., Northumberland Co., Upper Canada; 1815 Census: Wm. Draper; 2 males over 16; 2 females over 16; 1 male under 16; 3 females under 16 (Newcastle District Census & Assessment Records, Cramahe Twp.)5 He appeared on the census of 1817 at Cramahe Twp., Northumberland Co., Upper Canada; 1817 Census: Wm. Draper; 2 males over 16; 2 males under 16; 4 females (Newcastle District Census & Assessment Records, Cramahe Twp.)5 He appeared on the census of 1818 at Cramahe Twp., Northumberland Co., Upper Canada; 1818 Census: William Draper; 1 male over 16; 1 female over 16; 3 males under 16; 3 females under 16 (Newcastle District Census & Assessment Records, Cramahe Twp.)5 He appeared on the census of 1820 at Haldimand Twp., Northumberland Co., Upper Canada; 1820 Census: William Draper; 3 males 16 to 60; 2 females 16 to 60; 2 males under 16; 1 female under 16; Total: 8 (Newcastle District Census & Assessment Records, Haldimand Twp.)
Note: Haldimand Township is mentioned here for the first time, as far as I have seen. It is the next township west of Cramahe, with a long border and lots of movement between. (Dan Buchanan, Apr 12 2026.)5 He William Draper's older brother Thomas was established in Loughborough Township, Frontenac County from around 1818 to 1833. At the same time there are land transactions for Thomas related to Richmond Township and Ernestown Township, which are to the west in Lennox & Addington County. Records in ancestry show various of these place names as birth places for Thomas's kids, which I must question as being applied from a distance and with little actual knowledge. The 1819 Loughborough census specifically shows Thomas living there. It is less certain where William was at this time. All of this is rather confusing. Unfortunatley, early census records are generally not online, so not available for this project. If there are local census records for these areas, there might be further details there to locate the two brothers during this period. (Dan Buchanan, Apr 15 2026) circa 1822 at Loughborough Twp., Frontenac Co., Upper Canada. He lived in 1824 at Loughborough Twp., Kingston Co., Upper Canada; Several children of William & Lydia's daughter, Lucretia (Draper) Boyle, were born in Loughborugh Twp. between 1824 and 1833, before that family went to Michigan. (Dan Buchanan, Apr 17 2026.)6 He appeared on the census of January 1833 at Loughborough Twp., Frontenac Co., Upper Canada; "The first Mormon missionaries came to Loughborough, Ontario, Canada in 1832, following by Brigham Young and his brother Joseph trudging through the snow in January 1833. They preached with great success converting 45 souls to the Church. Among the many, were members of the Draper family. Thomas and Mary Mosier Draper joined that year; records show Thomas' sister, Phoebe (Draper Palmer Brown) joined on 17 Feb 1833. Three years later, William Draper, Jr., while on his Canadian mission from Ohio, baptized Mary's first son, William Carey Jr. in 1835." from "Life History of Mary Mosier Carey Draper" by Kaye Durfee Warnke, February 2016, found in Notes with Mary Mosier's FindaGrave record. https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/58511940/mary-draper)
Note: Loughborough Township is directly north of Kingston Township which contains the town of Kingston. Thomas Draper, William's brother, is already established here.4 He "In early January 1833, Brigham Young and his brother Joseph departed on a mission to Upper Canada.[35] Even though Brigham's wife, Miriam, had died the previous September, leaving him with two young daughters, he left them in the care of relatives to share his message. Brigham and Joseph Young travelled on foot "most of the way through snow and mud from one to two feet deep."[36] Reaching the eastern end of Lake Ontario, they found that the channel had frozen over the previous night, allowing them to cross on the ice. However, the ice was very thin, so they proceeded with care. In Brigham Young's words, the ice "bent under our feet, so that in places the water was half shoe deep, and we had to separate from each other, the ice not being capable of holding us."[37] They continued six miles on the ice before arriving at Kingston, a remarkable example of having "faith in every footstep." From Kingston they proceeded to the Loughborough Township area, a few miles north of Kingston, where they preached for approximately one month, baptizing forty-five people, and organized "the West Loboro and other Branches."[38] " from "Canadian Mormons, History of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints", Roy A. Prete and Carma T. Prete, Editors, "Eastern Canada, An Early Fruitful Field, 1829-77", Carma T. Prete. He lived on 24 March 1833 at Loughborough Twp., Frontenac Co., Upper Canada; "Baptism Date: March 24 1833" per Membership LDS report. Note: This is from LDS report of William Draper Jr. This would be one of the eariliest baptisms for the Daper family, in Loughborugh, in that first encounter with Brigham Young and the other missionaries who visited Upper Canada. (Dan Buchanan, Apr 16 2026.)2 He "Brigham did not stay home for long. In April 1833, he embarked on another missionary journey. On his way to the Ernestown-Loughborough area of Upper Canada, he stopped for a time to preach in Lyons, New York, where he baptized thirteen and organized a branch. Among the converts in Lyons was a young man named Jonathan Hampton, whom Young ordained to the priesthood and recruited to be his missionary companion.[43] Young and Hampton preached on the American side of the border until 22 May, when they took a steamboat from Ogdensburg, New York, up the Saint Lawrence River to Kingston. They were greeted by Church members in Ernestown and Loughborough, who made them welcome in their homes. Young was pleased to find there had been seventeen people baptized since he and his brother Joseph were there three months earlier. In his journal account, Brigham Young mentioned the names of some of the Church members in the area-James Lake, Dennis Lake, William Draper, Daniel Wood, Henry Wood, Artemus Millet, Peter Boice, Brother Pixley, and Brother T. Lot.[44]" from Brigham Young University, "Canadian Mormons, History of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints", Roy A. Prete and Carma T.
